Extended near work reduces blink rate and keeps the focusing system under sustained load. The result is often dryness, tired eyes, headaches and slower refocusing between near and distance.
Regular breaks, a screen positioned slightly below eye level, and adequate ambient lighting all help. Where symptoms persist, an examination can identify an uncorrected refractive error or a focusing and eye-teaming problem.
Task-specific lenses are sometimes prescribed for people who spend most of the day at a fixed working distance.
